Principal's Report Term 1 Week 2

WELCOME BACK

A warm welcome back to school for 2023. I would especially like to welcome our new families to the Carlingford Public School community, including our 81 Kindergarten students. Our new Kindy students have been completing their ‘Best Start’ literacy and numeracy assessment and will commence school at CPS next Monday, 6 February. Our Kindergarten students will commence at 9:25am and finish at 3:15pm (same as whole school).

Our P&C will host a ‘Tea and Tissues’ morning tea for our new Kindergarten parents, on Monday 6 February, commencing at 9:40am.

STAFF UPDATE

Mrs Kristensen will be relieving Deputy Principal two days / week, sharing the role with our substantive Deputy Mrs Edgley, who works three days / week.

Mr Boyd will be employed as an additional Deputy Principal, acting in the role for 2023.

Congratulations to our Relieving Assistant Principals for 2023. Miss Eunice Cheung will lead Early Stage 1, Mr Jye Vitnell leading Stage 2, and Mr Anthony Norman in charge of Stage 3. These positions are temporarily vacant with Mrs Assad being on maternity leave and Mr Boyd and Mrs Kristensen currently relieving in higher roles.

Congratulations to Mrs Elliott who commenced her new permanent role this year as Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction (AP, C&I) at CPS.

The AP, C&I position is a leadership role dedicated to ensuring literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills are embedded in curriculum and assessment; high quality teaching practices are enhanced; and the capabilities of middle leaders are strengthened in literacy and numeracy instruction.

Mrs Elliott will provide guidance and professional learning to enhance teacher growth and development in literacy and numeracy. She will not have her own class, but will work alongside teachers, co-planning and co-teaching in a continuous improvement process that seeks to uplift teaching skills and improve student outcomes.

Our school still has a 0.2 (1 day / week) AP,C&I position that has not been permanently filled. Mrs Kristensen will fill this role for 2023.

Congratulations to Ms Bronwyn Ross on her permanent appointment to CPS. She will join our Stage 3 team.

Welcome back to Mrs Neilson Borg who returns to CPS after a year’s maternity leave. Mrs Neilson Borg will work one day in Term one and four days from Term two onwards.

Congratulations to Ms Fianna Palmer, Mrs Carolyn Roberts, Mrs Nicole Hill and Miss Matilda Gobbe who are joining our staff on temporary contracts for 2023. Mrs Palmer  and Mrs Roberts will teach Year 2 while Mrs Hill and Miss Gobbe will teach Year 3.

Mrs Murray is extending her leave and will not be at CPS in 2023.

2023 CLASS STRUCTURE

We will start 2023 with approximately 775 students across 31 classes.

We would be hoping to move to our 2023 classes late this week or at the latest, Monday of next week.

Yesterday we had approximately 70 students absent. We need to be sure that the majority of these students are returning to school before we can confirm our planned 31 classes for 2023.

I will publish full staff lists in next week’s newsletter.

CPS SWIMMING CARNIVAL

This year Swimming Carnival will be held on 21 February at Epping Aquatic and Leisure Centre. More information about this event will be shared with families early next week.

COVID-19 UPDATE – CHANGE TO ISOLATION REQUIREMENTS

Change to isolation requirements

Following the National Cabinet announcement in late 2022, people who test positive to COVID-19 do not need to isolate. In line with this announcement, the NSW Department of Education has worked with NSW Health to support all schools to adapt to this change while continuing to prioritise student and staff wellbeing by minimising the risk of COVID-19 transmissions.

Stay home if you are unwell

Students and staff should continue to stay home when sick

Students, staff and visitors should only attend school when they are symptom free. We strongly encourage all students, staff and visitors to follow the guidance issued by NSW Health. We will continue to send home students or staff displaying symptoms.

If COVID-19 symptoms occur, your child should undertake a rapid antigen test (RAT).

If the test comes back negative for COVID-19, the student should still not return to school until either:

  • the student no longer has any symptoms, or

  • a medical certificate is provided to the school confirming that symptoms are explained by another diagnosis (such as hay fever)

For positive COVID-19 cases

If a student or staff member receives a positive RAT or PCR test, they should:

  • record the positive result, if a RAT was taken, through the Service NSW website or Service NSW– please add details of your child's school or early childhood education centre when prompted.

  • notify the school of the positive RAT or PCR test result as soon as possible.

If there is a positive case in your child’s class, year or other grouping, your child can continue to attend school in line with NSW Health advice.

Negative results do not need to be reported to Service NSW or to the school.

If you require additional RAT kits for your child, please get in touch with our admin staff (front office) who can provide or organise additional kits.

Vaccinations

COVID-19 vaccination is the best protection against severe illness and reduces the risk of spreading it to others.

We strongly recommend all eligible students (and their families) who are 5 years and older get vaccinated against COVID-19, including booster vaccinations as they become available to different groups.
