This week at Carlingford Public School we are celebrating ‘School Administrative and Support Staff Week.’ Our SASS team include our amazing administration team of, Tania Cochrane, Suzanne Williams, Jackie Gordon, Anna Michales and Donna Fraser, our School Learning Support teachers’ aides Kim Catt, Ratika Rana, Jenny Liles, Priscilla Mallison, Pavitra Aravamudhan, Tahira Col and Ashima Sakkarwal, our Business Manager, Jill Belme and our General Assistant John Clowes.

These wonderful people play a huge role in the day-to-day operation of our school and without them I’m sure our school would not function. On behalf of the students, staff, and community of Carlingford Public School I would like to say a huge THANK – YOU! Yesterday we were delighted to be able to provide a special luncheon for our SASS team.

KINDERGARTEN CHICKS

For the past two weeks Kindergarten have had the pleasure of looking after some baby chicks. Kindergarten has been learning all about living things in science this term and have put their knowledge into practice during our hatching program. The chicks have blended seamlessly into our school environment and are often seen participating in Mathematics and English lessons, marking students work, attending K-2 Assembly and even playground duty. A big thank you to Sam from Henny Penny Hatching for providing a wonderful opportunity for our students. All our chicks will be adopted this Thursday but will be sorely missed by the students and staff.

K - 2 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Next Wednesday, we will be holding our annual K - 2 Athletics Carnival. The carnival will be held on the school oval and will run between 9:40 and 11:30am. Parents are most welcome to join us.

STAGE 1 ELIZABETH FARM EXCURSION

On Wednesday 31 August (Year 1) and Thursday 1 September (Year 2), Stage 1 students went on an excursion to Elizabeth Farm at Rosehill to support learning as part of our history unit “The Past in the Present”. As they toured the residence of Elizabeth and John Macarthur, the oldest remaining post-colonisation dwelling in Australia, students were transported back to a time before electricity and plumbing.

Students enjoyed playing a variety of pre-technology games, including “hoop and stick,” “skittles,” “cup and ball” and quoits. They learned to use a quill and ink for writing (and discovered that ink can be messy!). The students soon discovered it was not all fun in the ‘olden days’ – washing clothes was hard work and could take a full day! Students had a chance to experience this for themselves, using a washboard and soap, rinsing, and wringing the clothes and hanging them out to dry. Some new vocabulary was learned, including ‘cellar,’ ‘bonnet’ and ‘chamber pot.’

The students will be using their new words and experiences of the past in their recount writing this week.

SRC MUFTI DAY - STEWART HOUSE FUNDRAISER - THURSDAY 15 SEPTEMBER

Next Thursday, 15 September, our Student Representative Council have organised a 'Sporting Hero' mufti day, where all students are asked to come dressed as a sporting hero. Their sporting hero could be a world-famous superstar, a local personality, Mum, or Dad or simply themselves. Students are asked to bring in a gold coin donation with all money raised going to Stewart House.

Stewart House is an organisation who provide opportunities for 1600 disadvantaged public school children each year to attend their safe haven next to Curl Curl Beach at no cost to their parents or carers. During a 12-day stay, they are provided with dental, optical, hearing, and medical screening and treatment. The children participate in educational programs and excursions designed to develop their social and emotional skills, build self-esteem, and improve their overall wellbeing. This experience provides children with a much-needed break from their current circumstances, and they are inspired to see beyond the present and to have real hope and positive aspirations for their future.

PEER SUPPORT UPDATE

This week in Peer Support we further develop the range of strategies we can use in challenging situations. This session focuses on step 3 of the “Pause, Plan, Proceed Model”; Proceed. To learn from situations and move forward, children need to go beyond thinking of strategies and action them. Leaders will remind the children in their group that, despite the use of a range of strategies, sometimes they cannot change the situation. At these times, it is important to accept the situation and move forward with a positive outlook.

Encourage your child to follow through with strategies they have discussed and planned to use. It is important to then help them evaluate if this has worked or if they need to try a different strategy.

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS

The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) Book Week is being celebrated at Carlingford Public School! The 2022 CBCA theme this year is “Dreaming with Eyes Open” and children from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been looking closely at the nominated books all term. To celebrate Book Week, we are hosting an array of events.

Book Fair

The Book Fair is a family event where adults and children will have the opportunity to explore a huge range of affordable books featuring characters and subjects’ kids love and want to read about. From newly released books and bestsellers to award-winning titles and perennial favourites.

This is also a great way for you to learn about and discuss your child's interests and every book sold benefits our school, adding resources to our library and classrooms.

The Book Fair will be held in the library and take place between Monday 19 and Thursday 22 September and will be open each day from 8.45 am to 9.15 am and 3.15 pm to 3.45 pm.

On Tuesday, 20th September (Book Parade), the Book Fair will be open from 8.45 am to 12 pm.

Payment can be made through EFTPOS (No Amex) in the library and is the preferred method of payment. Cash will also be accepted.

Dress Up and Parade

On Tuesday, 20 September, we will be holding our book character parade. The Book Week dress up and parade is a day event where children can come to school dressed up as their favourite book character. The parade will take place between 10:15 – 11:25am and will be held under the undercroft (new building).

Parents will have the opportunity to join us for the book parade and are welcome to join their children for a picnic lunch between 11:25 – 12:10pm.

 Book Week Activities

Leading up to Book Week, children will be engaged in classroom activities and competitions associated with the 2022 CBCA Books. Children will have the chance to enter the free competitions and win vouchers to spend at the Book Fair!

If you have any questions, please feel free to see Mr. Vitnell (Teacher Librarian) in the library before or after school.

TELL THEM FROM ME – PARENT SURVEY

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 5 September and 21 October. Though participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Information about the survey is available at the TTFM website.

LOST PROPERTY

The lost property box outside the library is overflowing with clothing. If your child has lost clothing this term, please check the box after school.

Please also ensure all your child's property is clearly marked for school. We will be donating the items not claimed before the end of this term.

KEELER STREET GATE

The Keeler St gate is open on timed entry each day to enable convenient entry to school for our community.

After the second bell at 9:25am each day a staff member checks the walkway is clear down to the pedestrian crossing on Keeler St and then locks the gate.

If your child is arriving at school after 9:25am, please ensure they enter school via the office in Rickard Street as this gate has unrestricted access during the school day.
