FATHER’S DAY STALL

A huge thank you to our P&C for organising our Father’s Day stall yesterday. Special mention to Emily Wong and Rob Kerle for their efforts over recent weeks. Thank you to the following parents for helping with the stall – Stephanie Lam, Lynley Saunders, Belle L Sitingco, Belinda Sultana, Sadaf Adeel, Kylie Rickard, Jessie Li, Kylie Morris, Joanne Zhou, Winnie Zheng, Zhimin Cai, Ella Xu, Xiaoyan Mao, Shaomin Su, Joycelyn Lim, Afshan Khan, Shaila Yasmin, Linda Xu and Jiyoung Park.

On behalf of the Carlingford Public School community, I’d like to wish all our dads and Grandfathers a wonderful Father’s Day this coming Sunday.

PARENT WORKSHOPS

Thank you to those who were able attend the 'New Arrival' and 'Resilience' workshops. It was lovely seeing parents back onsite and connecting as a community.

We value community participation and as part of our Strategic Direction 3, we have a team who are dedicated in supporting parent well-being.

The team will read the feedback forms to see which areas we could focus on for our future workshops.

If you were unable to attend but still interested in accessing the presentation notes, we will make them available to you here and through school ClassDojo.

We would also like to thank the P&C for preparing the morning tea for this event. We have a great community here at CPS.

STAGE 1 ELIZABETH FARM EXCURSION

Our Stage 1 students are visiting Elizabeth Farm this week as they explore the history topic ‘The Past in the Present’. As a part of this unit of work students will be learning about what life was like in the past, what aspects of the past we can see today and how changes in technology have shaped our daily lives. As students explore Elizabeth Farm, they will examine evidence of the past to learn what life was like for the wealthy Macarthur family and their hard-working servants, many of whom were convicts.

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY

Our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

The survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 5 September and 23 October.

More information about the survey is available at the TTFM website.

CHECK IN ASSESSMENT

Check-in assessments are online assessment for students in Years 3 to 9. They are mapped to the NSW Syllabuses and National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions. There are two assessments:

  • reading

  • numeracy

Each assessment is designed to be quick and easy to administer, consisting of between 40 to 50 multiple choice questions.

The Check-in assessments are a valuable tool to support schools in identifying student strengths and areas for improvement in literacy and numeracy, to help inform teaching practice. The Semester 2 Check-in assessments are starting in Week 8 this term for all Year 6 students. In addition to the numeracy and reading assessments, Year 6 students also complete a new writing task.

In Term 4, Years 3, 4 and 5 will complete their check in assessment between 10 October to 4 November.

PARRAMATTA / MERRYLANDS ZONE ATHLETICS SQUAD

The Parramatta / Merrylands Zone Athletics Carnival will take place on Monday 5 September (track events) and Wednesday 7 September (field events) at Barton Park. Good luck to our Zone Athletics squad (see last week’s newsletter for team list).

PEER SUPPORT UPDATE

In Peer Support this week students will revisit the 3-step model introduced last week to encourage resilient responses to challenging situations; Pause, Plan, Proceed. This week the focus is on step 2 of the model, Plan. In Peer Support children learn the need to develop a range of coping strategies and be creative in drawing on these when planning responses. Responses include persevering, seeing the positive side to situations and engaging in activities they enjoy as a distraction for a short time.

Encourage your child to talk with you about strategies they could use as difficulties arise.

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS

The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) Book Week is being celebrated at Carlingford Public School! The 2022 CBCA theme this year is “Dreaming with Eyes Open” and children from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been looking closely at the nominated books all term. To celebrate Book Week, we are hosting an array of events.

Book Fair

The Book Fair is a family event where adults and children will have the opportunity to explore a huge range of affordable books featuring characters and subjects’ kids love and want to read about. From newly released books and bestsellers to award-winning titles and perennial favourites.

This is also a great way for you to learn about and discuss your child's interests and every book sold benefits our school, adding resources to our library and classrooms.

The Book Fair will be held in the library and take place between Monday 19 and Thursday 22 September and will be open each day from 8.45 am to 9.15 am and 3.15 pm to 3.45 pm.

On Tuesday, 20th September (Book Parade), the Book Fair will be open from 8.45 am to 12 pm.

Payment can be made through EFTPOS (No Amex) in the library and is the preferred method of payment. Cash will also be accepted.

Dress Up and Parade

On Tuesday, 20 September, we will be holding our book character parade. The Book Week dress up and parade is a day event where children can come to school dressed up as their favourite book character. The parade will take place between 10:15 – 11:25am and will be held under the undercroft (new building).

Parents will have the opportunity to join us for the book parade and are welcome to join their children for a picnic lunch between 11:25 – 12:10pm.

Book Week Activities

Leading up to Book Week, children will be engaged in classroom activities and competitions associated with the 2022 CBCA Books. Children will have the chance to enter the free competitions and win vouchers to spend at the Book Fair!

If you have any questions, please feel free to see Mr. Vitnell (Teacher Librarian) in the library before or after school.

LOST PROPERTY
The lost property box outside the library is overflowing with clothing. If your child has lost clothing this term, please check the box after school.

Please also ensure all your child's property is clearly marked for school. We will be donating the items not claimed before the end of this term.

KEELER STREET GATE

The Keeler St gate is open on timed entry each day to enable convenient entry to school for our community.

After the second bell at 9:25am each day a staff member checks the walkway is clear down to the pedestrian crossing on Keeler St and then locks the gate.

If your child is arriving at school after 9:25am, please ensure they enter school via the office in Rickard Street as this gate has unrestricted access during the school day.
