The Teacher’s Federation have called a 24 hour strike on Thursday 30 June. Further information will be communicated early next week regarding school operations on this day.

KINDERGARTEN 2023 - OPEN MORNING – POSTPONED

Due to the impeding Teachers Strike on Thursday 30 June our Open Day has been postponed to Thursday 21 July, 2022.

We will be holding an Open Day for 2023 Kindergarten families on the new date of Thursday 21 July, commencing at 9:45am. The morning will consist of a ‘Welcome to Carlingford Public School’ address in the hall, a tour of the school, a visit to the Kindergarten rooms and will conclude with morning tea.

We look forward to meeting our new students and their families.

Please inform any potential 2023 Kindergarten families of our Open Day and our wonderful school.

FAREWELL TO MRS CALF

Mrs Calf will be officially retiring at the end of this term. Mrs Calf joined our school from Epping West in 2018.

Mrs Calf has had a long and distinguished career with the Department of Education, teaching in 8 schools and also serving as an EAL/D consultant for a number of years.

Mrs Calf has been a wonderful asset to our school, not just for the impact she has had on the students she has taught, but also as her role as a mentor to our EAL/D staff, and the classroom teachers she has worked with. Mrs Calf has had a huge impact on the way our school caters for the diverse learning needs of our EAL/D students.

On behalf of the Carlingford Public School community, I would like to thank Mrs Calf for her contribution to our school over the last 4 and half years and wish her well in her retirement.

We will be holding an official farewell assembly for Mrs Calf next Tuesday, 28 June, commencing at 12:15pm. Parents are most welcome to attend.

SEMESTER 1 REPORTS

I have been busy reading Semester 1 reports over the last few weeks. Congratulations and thank our hardworking students and staff for their efforts throughout the semester. Reports will be available for viewing on the CPS Parent Portal from next Monday, 27 June.

NEW PLAYGROUND UPDATE

The tender process has been completed for our long-awaited playground equipment upgrade. Unfortunately, all submissions came in more expensive than what we had budgeted for. We are now in the process of reviewing our plans and hoping to move forward as soon as possible. We are hopeful that our P&C will be able to contribute additional funds in order to deliver our project this year.

SUEZ RECYCLING and WASTE EDUCATION PROGRAM

Over the next two weeks, SUEZ, will visit our school to deliver an in-school recycling and education program to our students in Stages 2 and 3. It is designed to help students understand the relationship between waste and the environment, build everyday tools to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste, and become passionate champions for more sustainable living in their schools, homes and communities.

During these sessions, students will look at the ‘what, why and where’ of household waste. Students explore and learn what goes in each bin, where it goes, what happens to it and the impact on our environment if waste isn’t managed well.

Students also investigate how to make smarter decisions while shopping for everyday items and reduce packaging waste at the source. Students will explore different types of packaging, what can and can’t be recycled, the pros and cons of buying in bulk, and where different kinds of waste are likely to end up.

Composting is also examined, exploring how it works by getting to know the bugs and critters in our soils that break down organic materials – whether in a backyard compost bin or on an industrial scale.

KOOMURRI ABORIGINAL INCURSION

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

To celebrate NAIDOC week, CPS students participated in ‘the ultimate dreamtime experience’ run by Aboriginal group, Koomurri on Monday 20 June.

Highlights of the day included;

  • smoking ceremony & welcome song and dance concert show
  • didgeridoo & storytelling
  • artefacts, weaponry, bush survival and history
  • Aboriginal face painting
  • Aboriginal song and dance
  • Aboriginal art on canvas
  • boomerang throwing
  • farewell concert with student and teacher participation
  • paint your own boomerang - entire school or per individual class
  • paint your own message stones

Below are a few reviews from students:

Orion, 1K - My favourite part of our incursion was the boomerang throwing and face painting.

Parkyn, KC - I really liked the boomerang throwing because I have never done it before.

Ben, KC - My favourite part was getting my face painted with the three stripes.

Jonathan, 3K - I really enjoyed throwing the boomerang because it was cool learning about how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people used them to hunt.

Elizaveta, 6Y - I really enjoyed the face painting and the dancing. I loved using the clapping sticks and getting dressed up in the cultural clothes to perform.

Elizabeth, 5R - My favourite part was when we were listening to the dreamtime stories and got to act out some of them out. We have never done that before so it was really fun.

Catalina, 5R - The activity that I enjoyed most was the dancing because I got to learn new dance moves and learn about Aboriginal culture.

Clytie, 4P - I enjoyed the boomerang throwing and face painting because they were both activities I never get to do much.

Kaitlyn, 4P - My favourite part was learning about how Aboriginal people celebrate their culture through dance and storytelling.

Thank you to Ms Tillett and the Aboriginal Education committee for the organisation of this day. Thank you to Mr Vitnell, who has planned lessons for each Stage across the school to celebrate NAIDOC week.

CPS DEBATING TEAM

Congratulations to both our debating teams who defeated Ermington PS in last week’s debate.

KINDERGARTEN – LIVING WITH PETS INCURSION

This Thursday, 23 June, our Kindergarten students will attend an incursion run by Parramatta City Council, “Living Safely with Pets”. Students will learn all about how to look after a pet and discuss the responsibilities and benefits involved.

I believe the “guest speaker” will be an adorable Labrador.

CLASS PARENTS

The P&C Association at our school provides a wide range of benefits to the school and our community. These range from fun social events, school services such as Canteen and Uniform to major contributions to learning and built infrastructure, such as reading aids and Playground upgrades. We also subsidise or fully cover the cost of important school activities such as Band, and transport for sporting events.

We can't do this without the support of our volunteers, whose numbers are small compared to the size of our parent group. You can volunteer in our canteen, at events, design collateral or as a class parent depending on your available interests and time.

In particular we are looking for Class parents who can form an active social network within the school and tighten the bond between the school and our parents. We are also looking for language ambassadors who can use their bilingual skills to help new parents and students from overseas acclimatise and get involved at our school.

If you have any available time and an interest in being a bigger part of our community, we can't wait to hear from you.  Please see our flyer below or you can contact us at cpspcwelcome@gmail.com or cpspcclassparents@gmail.com

ONGOING TRAFFIC CONCERNS

Recently I have witnessed countless drivers crossing over the double lines on Rickard Street performing illegal three point turns and U turns. This jeopardises the safety of both motorists and pedestrians.

Similarly, some parents are parking illegally in no stopping zones, which again puts our school community at risk by blocking vision of both drivers and pedestrians. A number of our parents are also dropping off and collecting their children while their car is still on the road in a line of traffic.

Council rangers and the Police have been notified and will be increasing patrols outside the school.

I urge all parents dropping their children at school to use the pedestrian crossing to cross the road. This is the safest option and it also teaches our students pedestrian safety.

The safety of our students is everyone’s responsibility – please play your part.

LOST PROPERTY BOX

Students and Parents are requested to check the lost property box for any lost items as there is a large amount of unclaimed clothing, lunch boxes drink bottles and umbrellas.

Parents are requested to label all their child/ren’s belongings and if lost, ask the child to check the lost property box. Items without names will be regularly disposed.
