Parents attended a school readiness session, with Ms. Tillett, Mr. Vitnell and Rob Kerle (P&C) presenting information. Parents also had the opportunity to participate in some hands on Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Geography and PDHPE activities.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Our students will commemorate Remembrance Day this Friday with a minute silence at 11:00am. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, a treaty was signed that brought an end to World War One. Remembrance Day is a day to reflect on the atrocities of war and to honour and pay tribute to all those who have served in the armed forces to defend our country’s freedom.

Carlingford Public School has a long and proud association with the armed forces, with many of our past & present, students, staff and families fighting to defend our great nation. One of our teachers, Frederick Kilpatrick was granted special leave from the Education department in 1898, to fight in the Boer War in South Africa. Frederick was the first New South Welshman to serve in the Boer War.

Similarly, ex pupil Ray Simpson, was awarded the ‘Victoria Cross’ & the ‘Distinguished Conduct Medal’ for bravery during the Vietnam War. Tributes to both these soldiers can be found in our office foyer. “Lest we forget”.

NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK

Planet Ark's National Recycling Week is celebrating a quarter century of helping Australians recycle right from 7-13 November by asking Australians to celebrate recycling in a way that is meaningful to them.

Every week is Environment Week at CPS!

Here at Carlingford Public School, we are focused on how important the environment is.  Therefore, we have introduced many recycling initiatives to help play our part in protecting the environment.

We have already progressed with soft plastic recycling from our canteen and staff rooms, composting and co-mingle recycling options around the school with limited resources.

Sustainability has been embedded into our learning programs across various KLA’s over many years (eg, students creating persuasive texts in English, the Stage 1 ‘Living Things’ science unit). This has developed interest in the student cohort and engagement with environmental issues, resulting in a strong voluntary lunchtime ‘Garden Club’ program, and our Environmental Team (Years 5 & 6).

Here are some statistics that we are sharing with our students this week during National Recycling Week.  We hope that you can make a difference too.

  • Australia is one of the richest countries in the world and one of the worst countries in terms of waste generation, therefore we should have a leading recycling rate. However, Australia is losing the recycling race, ranking only 13th in the world.

  • The New South Wales Government banned single-use plastics, commencing 1 November 2022, banning plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates and bowls, expanded polystyrene food service items, plastic cotton bud sticks, and microbeads in cosmetics.

STUDENTS ARRIVING AT SCHOOL BEFORE 9:00am

Parents are reminded that there is no supervision of students at school before 9:00am.

(Camp Australia students excluded). Parents are asked to send their child/ren to school after 9:00am.

On the rare occasion that you need to send your child/ren to school before 9:00am, they are to sit under the COLA until a teacher supervision arrives (9:00am).

2023 PLANNING

Planning has commenced for our 2023 classes and class structure. We are expecting to start the year with approximately 800 students spread across 31 classes. In an effort to get staffing, student placement and resourcing as accurate as possible, it’s critical that we know how many students will be returning to CPS in 2023.

A Google form was emailed to parents this week seeking clarification on returning to school in 2023. The link is: Returning to CPS in 2023 Parent Survey .  Would you please complete this short form for each of your children to notify us if:

·         Your child/ren will be returning to CPS at the start of Term 1, 2023 – 31 January.

·         Your child/ren will be returning to CPS, but late (please provide date)

·         Your child/ren will not be returning to CPS.  If your child is not returning to CPS we ask you to also email or provide a letter to the office.

Thank you to the 380 families who have completed and submitted the form. At this stage only 15 of our existing students in Years K – 5, will not be returning in 2023. If you have not yet completed the form, please do so as soon as possible.

SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL TEST – 2024 INTAKE

Selective high schools cater for high potential and intellectually gifted students.

They help students learn by:

·         grouping them with other gifted students

·         using special teaching methods so students can learn concepts in more detail and more quickly

·         supporting their wellbeing needs

Most students in selective high schools enjoy learning more when their classmates have similar abilities and interests.

As well as providing for students’ academic development, selective high schools also offer a broad range of classes and extra-curricular activities such as: sports, creative and performing arts, music, and special interest clubs.

Applications for placement in Year 7 in selective high schools in 2024 are now open and close on 16 November 2022. All applications must be submitted online by the due date.

Application information can be downloaded from https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. The online application link is available now. More information is available here: Information for SHS applicants (pdf)
