Principal's Report Term 4 Week 3

STATE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last Thursday, 20 October our Junior Girls 100m Relay team of Julia, Emily, Kayla and Jolin represented Carlingford Public School and Sydney West Region at NSW PSSA State Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

The girls competed in the very first heat of 5 relay heats, and ran a faster time than their Regional finals winning time, finishing in 1:03.40- a team personal best!  A team that ran in their heat- St Catherine’s Girls School- set a new Junior Girls Relay Record of 57.32seconds.

Our relay team finished in the top 20 of every relay team at State Athletics- and these are the fastest relay teams across every Public, Catholic and Independent Private School in NSW- an incredible result for our girls!

Unfortunately, they missed out on qualifying for the semi finals by only 0.1 seconds, but they had a great time at their first State Athletics after never having the chance to get to this level in Athletics since they turned 8 as this is the first State Athletics since 2019.

They have now collectively set their sights on hopefully qualifying next year as the Senior Girls Relay. Here are two photos of them at the event- great smiles, girls!

2023 YEAR 6 LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Our Year 5 students, currently have the opportunity to submit an application for a 2023 leadership role. These roles include

  • Prefect

  • Sport House Captain and Vice – Captain

  • Canteen monitor

  • Library monitor

Application forms are available from class teachers and must be handed in to Mr Hinton or Mr Boyd by Friday of this week. We wish all our potential leaders all the best with the selection process.

CPS SCHOOL MAGAZINE

Throughout Term 4, several of our students from Years 3 to 6 have started working on a magazine that will be published to the school website at the end of the term. It is hoped that we will be able to publish a new edition at the end of every term. There is currently a survey being completed by the students to determine the name of the magazine. We will share the new name next week.

All the articles, artwork, games, poetry and editing will be done by our students. It is hoped that this will give our students an opportunity to share their talents with their peers and families. Everyone will be able to read the magazine online and we will print a small number of copies to be kept in the school library. It is hoped there will be news articles, interviews, games, poems, puzzles, how to guides, comics, and artworks created by the students. All submissions will be done through Microsoft Teams for student in Years 3 to 6. If students from younger years are interested in submitting work, they can talk to their classroom teacher.

Keep an eye out through the rest of Term 4 as the students are likely to start putting together some advertising for the new magazine as well.

Thanks to Mr Boyd for this initiative.

WORLD TEACHERS DAY – FRIDAY, 28 OCTOBER

Australia celebrates World Teacher’s Day this Friday, 28 October.

It’s an opportunity to recognise and thank the dedicated teachers who work in our public schools, and especially our amazing team at CPS.
Despite the challenges of the last few years, our teachers bring their best to work and continue to put their students first.
Teachers play an important role in our community and we thank them for their passion and dedication to inspire children and young people.

A huge thank you to our P&C who are providing a few special treats for our teachers this Friday.

SWEDISH TEACHERS VISIT

This Friday a team of Swedish teachers will visit our school to get a taste of what education looks like in Australia. They will focus on our new building and how we utilise the learning spaces and environment to maximise learning outcomes for our students.

2023 PLANNING

Planning has commenced for our 2023 classes and class structure. We are expecting to start the year with approximately 800 students spread across 31 classes. In an effort to get staffing, student placement and resourcing as accurate as possible, it’s critical that we know how many students will be returning to CPS in 2023.

A Google form was emailed to parents this week seeking clarification on returning to school in 2023. The link is: Returning to CPS in 2023 Parent Survey .  Would you please complete this short form for each of your children to notify us if:

  • Your child/ren will be returning to CPS at the start of Term 1, 2023 – 31 January.

  • Your child/ren will be returning to CPS, but late (please provide date)

  • Your child/ren will not be returning to CPS.  If your child is not returning to CPS we ask you to also email or provide a letter to the office.

Please complete the form before this Friday, 28 October.

KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION

Kindergarten transition for 2023 students will take place over three Thursdays, 27 October, 3 and 10 November.

There will be a morning (9:30am) and afternoon (12:45pm) session with the students split into groups of 20.

Parents information sessions will be held concurrently over the three sessions in the old hall.

We are looking forward to welcoming our new 2023 Kindy students to CPS tomorrow.

 CHECK IN ASSESSMENT

Check-in assessments are online assessment for students in Years 3 to 9. They are mapped to the NSW Syllabuses and National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions. Students are assessed in reading and numeracy.

Each assessment is designed to be quick and easy to administer, consisting of between 40 to 50 multiple choice questions.

Schools can access feedback soon after the completion of the assessment. The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs.

Students in Year 3, 4 and 5 will complete their check in assessment from 10 October – 4 November. (Year 6 completed theirs, including writing late last term)

SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL TEST – 2024 INTAKE

Selective high schools cater for high potential and intellectually gifted students.

They help students learn by:

  • grouping them with other gifted students

  • using special teaching methods so students can learn concepts in more detail and more quickly

  • supporting their wellbeing needs

Most students in selective high schools enjoy learning more when their classmates have similar abilities and interests.

As well as providing for students’ academic development, selective high schools also offer a broad range of classes and extra-curricular activities such as: sports, creative and performing arts, music, and special interest clubs.

Applications for placement in Year 7 in selective high schools in 2024 are now open and close on 16 November 2022. All applications must be submitted online by the due date.

Application information can be downloaded from https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. The online application link is available now. More information is available here: Information for SHS applicants (pdf)

Parents without internet access or who cannot use a computer can apply at a public library.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES AND CAMP AUSTRALIA SURVEY

We are seeking your feedback on our after school activity providers. This is a school run survey for us to gain some feedback about the need for before and after school care within our school community. There are also some questions for families who are currently using Camp Australia, our current before and after care provider.

TELL THEM FROM ME – PARENT SURVEY

This term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 5 September and 4 November. Though participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Information about the survey is available at the TTFM website.
