NEW ‘OUT of SCHOOL HOURS’ HUB

On 23 October last year, I received an email informing me that Carlingford Public School would be receiving an Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) Hub building, as part of the Before and After School Care Reform Program. Our OSHC Hub was installed on the edge of the oval last Wednesday.

When our OSHC lease went out to tender in August, we had no knowledge of the Department of Education’s OSHC Hub program.

The OSHC Hub includes toilet and kitchen facilities and can cater for up to 97 students (capacity subject to site inspection).

We hope to have the building operational by the start of Term 2. The building will be an invaluable asset to our school and Camp Australia. The most positive aspect of the new building is that Camp Australia will now be able to have furniture, activities and resources permanently set up and will no longer have to set up and pack up each day as is now the case in the new hall.

The current OSHC lease agreement we have with Camp Australia will be reviewed in terms of their allocated play areas for the students. We are hopeful that the new building will be handed over to Camp Australia by the end of this term.

Obviously the original lease agreement that we have in place with Camp Australia will need to be reviewed in terms of what areas will be used for OSHC, due to the new building now being part of the equation.

SPORTS COURTS

Our sport courts have been delayed in order to allow our OSHC Hub to be installed.  Now this is onsite, our sports courts project will now commence. We are hopeful that they will be operational by mid Term 2.

PARENT - TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Parent - teacher interviews are taking place on the below dates.  Interview bookings go live on Friday March 12.  The booking website and access code will be posted on School Story on Class Dojo. We are using a different website this year so parents can select a phone or face to face (“in person”) meeting.  If you select phone, please ensure you enter the contact number for the teacher to call you on the day.

Interpreter meetings will be held by phone ONLY.  Phone interview times for interpreters will be emailed directly to families next week.

Interviews are strictly ten minutes duration.  If you require a longer meeting time, please message your child’s class teacher to arrange an alternative time.

If you are coming into the school for a face to face meeting, interviews will be governed by COVID-19 guidelines. More information on COVID-safe check in procedures, waiting areas and venue locations will be shared soon.

HARMONY DAY

This year at Carlingford we will celebrate Harmony Day on Friday 19 March.  With the growing multicultural population in our school, we are already successfully embedding the message of inclusion and peace in our classrooms every day.

Students are asked to come to school in their national dress or orange-coloured clothes. Orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations.  It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

We all look forward to celebrating Harmony Day together again this year.

EASTER HAT PARADE

Many families in our school community celebrate Easter, and sharing traditions and celebrations is a valuable learning experience for all of us. The Easter Hat Parade is a long running tradition at Carlingford Public School, and is a fun way for us to share what is an important time for many of our friends.

Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students will be having an Easter Hat parade in the new Hall at 10.00am on Thursday 1st of April.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this indoor event will only be for students.  Please take photos of your child posing with their hat on at home.  This year students will be making their hats at home.  We would appreciate it if all hats could be brought in by Monday 29th March to allow us to ensure that every child has a hat for the day.  If you have any questions please see your child’s teacher.

SYDNEY WEST SWIMMERS

Today, Wednesday 17 March, a number of our students represented our school and the Merrylands / Parramatta Zone at the Sydney West Regional Swimming Carnival.

The students representing our school are:  Marvin, Ellie, James, Matthew, Mikaela, Samantha, Julia, Leo, Justine, Erica, Samuel, Sophie, & Hain.

We will provide their results in next week’s newsletter.

BUNNINGS GARDEN CLUB VISIT

This week, we welcomed Bunnings Rydalmere to our school. Bunnings worked with our Garden Club to plant new seedlings for the upcoming season. Thank you to Bunnings Rydalmere for their continued support.

Our Garden Club program at our school has now been running for the past 3 years. The students at Carlingford PS work collaboratively outdoors to propagate, plant, harvest and learn about the garden.

Garden beds with a mix of flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs can be found all around the Carlo Gardens.  Students learn how to prepare garden beds using garden scraps, compost, manure and crop rotation and watch their plants grow from seed to maturity where they then collect the seeds to begin the process again.

With a high emphasis on sustainability, our Carlo gardeners use harvested water from our school water tanks and compost from our worm farms or compost bins to help reduce waste and focus on what we can reuse to benefit our environment.

This is a wonderful, learning program enjoyed thoroughly by the students involved. For more information about the importance of sustainable learning please visit https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/learning-across-the-curriculum/sustainability/teaching-and-learning/kitchen-gardens

THE ‘TELL THEM FROM ME’ STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY – Yrs 4 - 6

Before the end of term, students in Years 4 – 6 will participate in the Department of Education initiative ‘Tell Them From Me’ student feedback survey.

The Tell Them From Me student survey asks students about a range of school experiences, including their engagement and wellbeing at school and beyond. It also asks students about teaching practices and the learning environment.

The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes.

The Tell Them From Me student survey asks students about a range of school experiences, including their engagement and wellbeing at school and beyond. It also asks students about teaching practices and the learning environment.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them.

PRE – SCHOOL GATE

Students and parents should not be entering or leaving school via the pre - school pedestrian gate or the vehicular gates in the top car park. The pre – school gate is solely for use by pre – school parents.  We are currently looking into options to relocate the access gate for the pre – school.

Access to and from school grounds for Carlingford Public School students and parents should be via the Keeler Street or Rickard Street gate (outside the library).
