Principal's Report Term 3 Week 4

ZONE ATHLETICS - TRACK & FIELD EVENTS

On Monday, our zone field events team competed at the Parramatta / Merrylands Zone athletics carnival. Students participated in long jump, high jump, shot – put, discus and 1500m long distance race.  Our students achieved some great results and CPS are currently sitting in 1st place from the 19 participating schools.  Next Monday, 19 August, our zone track team will compete at Homebush Athletics Centre. The combined results of both carnivals will be used to declare the overall winning school. Good luck to our athletes.  We hope to publish results in next week’s newsletter.

RYDE DANCE EISTEDDFOD - Saturday, Aug 17

Good luck to the CPS dance groups who will be competing at the Ryde Dance Eisteddfod this Saturday, August 17th. The Junior dancers need to meet Miss Kelly at Ryde Secondary College at 11:15am, the Intermediate's at 11:40am and the Seniors at 12:00pm.  I'm sure our dancers will be super impressive on Saturday. Good Luck to all our wonderful dancers and thanks to Miss Kelly and Miss Rachel for their efforts with the students.

LITERACY DAY – 2019

This year, Literacy Day will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 20, with a Literacy extravaganza taking place. The theme for 2019 Literacy Day is “Reading is my Secret Power”.  Our students will be entertained by a colourful storytelling company and a fantastic author.
K – 2 students will journey into the topical science-driven world of bees through the Co Theatre Physical production of ‘Royal Jelly’. This is an interactive show that combines comic characters, vivid story-telling, bee facts, puppetry and physical theatre that poses questions with the aim of extending young minds.
Years 3 – 4 will be treated to an entertaining show by Ruben Meerman called ‘The Surfing Scientist.’ Ruben is a surfer with a physics degree and a passion for science and education. He has appeared on several TV shows and has written 4 children’s science books.

Years 5 – 6 will also see Reuben Meerman in his performance about Climate Change. He explains the fundamental science behind climate change with spectacular live demonstrations, engaging visuals and exciting experiments.  Students and teachers are asked to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. I already have my outfit ready to go! Some of Mrs Castelletti’s suggestions for book characters include Tashi, Paddington Bear, dragons, pirates, bears, princesses, animals, make believe, Cinderella, Charlie & Lola, Where’s Wally, Pingu… - the list is endless.  A K – 6 parade will be held on the asphalt between 9:35 – 10:15am. Parents are most welcome to join us.
Thank you to Mrs Castelletti for her coordination of our wonderful Book Week activities.

2019 ICAS COMPETITION

Thank you to everyone who has registered and paid for ICAS this year. All papers are online assessments (ICAS Writing is paper-based only for Years 3 and 4). There will be some school iPads/laptops available for students who don’t have one. To ensure an engaging and beneficial experience for all students, please arrange for your child’s iPad to be fully charged on the sitting date.

The sitting dates are as follows:

Science – Thursday 5 September

Writing – Monday 9 September

English – Monday 16 September

Mathematics – Thursday 19 September

All participating students are to assemble under the COLA by 8am. This should leave sufficient time to complete the assessments before the school day starts.

TELL THEM FROM ME - STUDENT SURVEY

Like many other public schools in the state, Carlingford PS will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.  You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.  The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26 August and 25 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

TELL THEM FROM ME – PARENT SURVEY

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August and 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Our school will provide further information about how to access the survey. In the meantime, more information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

2020 KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS

Currently we have only 40 Kindergarten students enrolled for 2020. For the last three years we have commenced the year with 120 Kindergarten students spread across six classes.  If you have a child (or know of any families) who will be commencing Kindergarten at CPS in 2020, could you please call into the office and complete the enrolment process.

It’s critical that we know accurate student numbers as soon as possible as this impacts on how many teachers and classrooms we will be needed. With current Kindergarten enrolment numbers, we would only form two classes in 2020 as opposed to the six classes we have had since 2017.

Kindergarten transition is planned to take place earlier in Term 4, which is earlier than our normal transition schedule.

PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

In this week’s session, the students will establish connections with the other members of their group and develop their group agreement to enable them to work well together. Students will discuss an example of a challenging situation and some resilient and non-resilient responses.  Overviews of each Peer Support lesson will be shared in the newsletter each week. I encourage you to discuss these concepts with your child/ren to help them take an active role in Peer Support.

NEW RECYCLING PROGRAM TRIALED BY STAGE 3

Carlingford Public School and the P&C are introducing an innovative new Recycling program called ‘Charopy’.  This program is supported by the NSW ‘Return and Earn Scheme’ and helps children understand the benefits of recycling.  Charopy allows children to recycle eligible drink containers at school for a refund of l0c each.  With the help of silicone wristbands, the money the children earn, then becomes available to be spent in the school canteen.  As this is a trial for our school, only the Stage 3 students will be eligible to participate at the present time.  It is hoped that if successful, other Stages will be given the opportunity to participate later in the year.

 NCCD

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) is an annual process participated in by all Australian schools across the country. The aim of this process is to provide the Australian Government with consistent information about the number of students with disability in Australian schools and the type of adjustments they require in order to access and participate in education on the same basis as other students. From 2018, the NCCD will be used by the Australian Government to inform funding for schools, known as the ‘student with disability loading’.

If you are a parent, guardian or carer of a child with disability who requires ongoing adjustments at school, a teacher or another school staff member will consult with you to understand your child’s needs. This collaborative approach ensures the most appropriate adjustments are chosen to support your child’s learning and participation at school. In some cases, an individual education plan (IEP) or personal learning plan (PLP) may be developed to document specific educational goals and to review your child’s progress over time. Your child will be included in the NCCD if they require ongoing adjustments at school due to a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
