Principal's Report Term 1 Week 3

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

A huge thank you to Mrs Bickham, Mr Boyd and Mrs Woodbury for organising today’s swimming carnival. The weather was lovely and all students, teachers and spectators had a great day. There were many outstanding performances and it was fantastic to see so many of our students displaying the Carlingford spirit and ‘having a go’. Next week the newsletter will have a result sheet for every race.

Qualifying students will represent our school at the upcoming Parramatta/ Merrylands zone carnival.  Details of the zone carnival to come.

LIBRARY REFURBISHMENT

Our Library is currently undergoing a refurbishment with new future focussed furniture being installed.

The refurb will see the library with a new floor plan, shelving and book displays. Some of the existing benches and shelving will be removed opening up a more spacious ‘user friendly’ learning environment. Existing desktop computers will be replaced with laptops.

We are hoping to re – open the library in week 5, when borrowing and lessons can recommence.

A huge thank you to our P&C for contributing $26,000 to the library upgrade.

Guided Readers for reading will be moved into classrooms next week to further support the teaching of reading in all K to 2 classrooms. This will allow ease of access for teachers to choose appropriate texts to support student reading goals.  Home Readers have also been redistributed using the new levelling system across K to 2 classrooms and Home Reading (K-2) and Homework (K-6) will begin in Week 5 across the school.

LEARNING SUPPORT

This year, Learning Support will be provided by Mrs Edgley, Miss Filippi, Mrs Welsh (Tues & Wed), Mrs Murray (Tuesday / Wednesday) and Mrs Gathercole (Tuesday). Students with additional needs have been identified and will be offered extra assistance in Literacy & Numeracy. We hope to commence these programs next week.

EAL/D (English as an additional Language / Dialect)

Under this program, assistance is given to students of a non – English speaking background who require additional support in English proficiency. Our 2019 EAL/D team comprises of Miss Belme, Mrs Calf, Miss Wong and Miss Chohan.

At times students will be supported by an EAL/D teacher in collaboration with their class teacher, or withdrawn from class for intensive English language tuition. English is an additional language or dialect for over 80% of our students. Our EAL/D program will commence in Week 5.

HIGH SCHOOL EXPRESSION OF INTEREST – Yr 7 2020 INFORMATION SESSION

An information guide and expression of interest form will be sent home with your child within the next fortnight. Your child’s designated local high school, based on your address, will be written on the form. If your address has changed, please contact the school immediately.

An information afternoon will be held in 5/6P on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, 3.30 - 4.15pm. (Week 5).  Mrs Edgley will be available to assist parents with queries regarding the ‘Expression of Interest’ form for high school. Forms are to be returned to school in the week of March 11 (Week 7).

Please note the Selective High School placement process is conducted separately to this ‘expression of interest’ form.

If you have applied for placement at a Selective High School, the ‘expression of interest’ form still needs to be filled out with your alternative preferences to selective schools (eg local high school).

STAGE 3 INTERRELATE PROGRAM

Towards the end of Term 1, students in Year 5 and Year 6 will be involved in the educational program 'Moving into the Teen Years'. This program is run by Interrelate, a not-for-profit provider of relationship services. Interrelate work across more than 1000 schools and have been delivering student programs at our school for a number of years. Information regarding the program will be sent home with students next week.

This program, run by trained experts and supervised by classroom teachers, supports key elements of the ‘Personal Development and Health’ curriculum for Stage 3 students. There is a cost involved, which will be included on the Term 1 account.

The school is hosting a parent information evening for our community this year (no cost). This is an opportunity for parents and carers to meet an Interrelate educator and learn more about the student program. The session will provide families with information about the content, language and strategies used in the Interrelate programs. We hope it will be helpful for families who may be unfamiliar with Interrelate. All parents across our school are welcome to attend.

Date: Monday, March 11 2019. 6pm - 7pm (Venue to be confirmed)
