Homework at Carlingford Public School

Homework is not compulsory at Carlingford Public School and will not be reported on as part of the reporting process. This is in keeping with the Department of Education’s homework expectations.

Following discussions with our P&C and surveys within our parent community (2025), many families are looking for activities to help their children improve academically and to develop study habits / time management skills that will support them as they enter high school. If you chose to do homework with your child, we recommend creating a consistent routine and a distraction free environment where they can work.

School / Life balance

It is important to allow children time to play and participate in extracurricular activities like sports, music, and dance. To assist our families in finding a balance that works for them, we have provided a range of activities that can be completed throughout the year. Motivation to complete the tasks will need to be established at home and a reasonable expectation for the time spent on homework activities is outlined below. Rewards for completing homework might include family time, a special dinner, a movie, device time, or going somewhere special.

Year Group (30%)
Suggested time spent on homework (daily average)
Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten)
10 minutes: Home reading & high frequency word lists
Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)
20 minutes: Home reading and homework grid
Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4)
30 minutes: Home reading, digital learning platforms, homework grid, and projects
Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6)
60 minutes: Home reading, digital learning platforms, homework grid, and projects
Marking homework
Marking homework and setting expectations about completing tasks will be the responsibility of parents. Some of the additional tasks provided are activities that can be done together as a family or with another person. These tend to be practising skills and will not require review. Other tasks (particularly for the older grades) will take more time and may require some more support to complete. Most of these tasks will have many different solutions. If your child has answered the question and it makes sense, that's great. You can talk to them about other ways they might approach the question or present their responses.
Learning journey
Not every child will progress through their learning journey at the same rate. There will be some children who are still working at a younger level. Others may be ready to move ahead. Please seek advice from the classroom teacher regarding the appropriate level of tasks and support that your child might need to complete them. There is a big difference between completing a task with support and doing it independently. If the homework is too challenging and your child is not finding success with it, it can become detrimental to their self-esteem and approach to learning in general. Some children will need assistance breaking larger projects down into smaller tasks.
