Principal's Report Term 3 Week 9

2019 NAPLAN RESULTS

NAPLAN result have been released. Overall, we are very pleased with our results.

NAPLAN online, allowed a new assessment platform, allowing students to achieve beyond the previously highest bands of 6 (for Year 3) and 8 (for Year 5).

Both Year 3 & Year 5 outperformed similar school groups (SSG’s) and state averages in all areas of Literacy & Numeracy.

Percentages in top 2 bands compared favourably with 2018 results for both Year 3 & Year 5 in all areas of Literacy & Numeracy.

Well done Year 3 and Year 5 students and staff.

HILLS DANCE SPECTACULAR

Congratulations to our dance groups who participated in the Hills Dance Spectacular last Sunday. Our Juniors placed second and also were awarded the ‘most entertaining’ trophy. Our 3 / 4 dancers placed third and our seniors didn’t place but their performance was amazing. Congratulations to our dancers and Miss Kelly.

BAND PERFORMANCE

Last Friday evening our performance band played at the Spring Music Festival at ‘The Concourse’ in Chatswood.

Our students did a great job, playing beautifully in front of a large audience. I’m sure it was an experience they will never forget. I have enclosed some pictures of them in different moments to show you what was happening.

Although our band is small in size, they sounded amazing. They had the audiences vote of approval with many singing ‘Tequila’ and a group of teenagers dancing to ‘Another one bites the dust”. It was fantastic!

SWIM SCHOOL

Congratulations to our 60 students who attended swim school over the past two weeks. All participants improved in water confidence and swimming technique. Students will receive their certificates at this week’s Stage 1 assembly on Thursday.

Thank you to Miss Tran and Mrs Bowey for their organisation and accompanying the students to and from the sessions.

SUPERHERO MUFTI DAY

On Friday of Week 10, 27 September, we are having a superhero mufti day to fundraise for supporting farmers in drought. Students can come dressed as a superhero or a farmer.  We ask students to please bring a gold coin donation. This special day is linked to the imaginative writing unit that Year 2 has been doing this term creating superhero comics. On this day Year 2 students will share their comics with other students in the school.   This special day will also coincide with our Peer Support afternnon tea party, to celebrate the lessons learned in Peer Support.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE

Our school is seeking feedback regarding Before & After School Care needs for 2020. We are hoping that all K – Year 5 families can find 5 minutes to complete this short survey. If we have an accurate idea of the demand for B/A school care, we can make sure that all children requiring placement will be offered a position. Thank you for assisting the school in understanding more about your family’s child care needs. The survey can be accessed through the following link,

https://forms.gle/J2CEpdMbpjKuJnZn9

The survey is open until the end of Term 3 and can also be found on Sentral and Class Dojo. Thank you for your support.

Levels 1, 2 and 3 walls and ceilings have been sheeted and painting is almost complete to all levels. Services fit-off has commenced on Level 2 & 3 as well as floor coverings to the Practical Activity Areas. The bi fold doors have been installed to the home bases and the cavity slider doors will be installed in the coming weeks. Externally, the scaffold has been removed allowing the external landscaping works and Level 1 ramp connecting the new build to the existing school, to commence.

Construction activities as well as commissioning are continuing to be discussed with the Project Reference Group. Please visit the School Infrastructure NSW’s website, for further information concerning the upgrade: https://www.schoolinfrastructure.nsw.gov.au/projects/c/carlingford-public-school.html

COSFEST – SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

Our ‘Community of School’s’ will be holding its annual red carpet COSFEST short film festival on Wednesday, 20 November at Cumberland High School. Individual, small groups or entire classes are eligible to enter in the K – 2 or 3 – 6 section.

All films should be submitted in a digital format on a USB. Films need to be between 1 – 2 minutes in length. The compulsory element for the films this year is ‘voice’ which must be evident in some form.

Films need to be submitted by Friday 27 September to Mr Bhandarkar or Mrs Foo.

Interested students should see their teacher, Mr Bhandarkar or Mrs Foo for further details.

PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

This week’s session is our last formal lesson.  In this week’s final session of the Peer Support module Moving Forward, children will reflect on what they have learned over the past seven weeks.  The students will make a cube to remind them to draw on their strengths, achievements and people who support them when faced with challenging situations.  These protective factors promote confidence and motivate students to approach new situations where they can then apply the Pause, Plan, Proceed Model.

Thank you for discussing the Peer Support concepts with your child/ren to help them practise their skills in resilience.

Next week, we will be holding our Peer Support Party during afternoon tea on Friday 27th September 2019.

This is an exciting opportunity for students to celebrate the completion of Peer Support with their student peer group.

Your child will be given an invitation from their Peer Leaders, asking them to bring some food to share. Please note that students will have already eaten lunch and a small amount of food will be sufficient. Students are encouraged to wear mufti on the day (coinciding with the superhero mufti day).

We are trying to look after the environment and are aiming for minimal waste. Keeping this in mind, we would appreciate it if you could only provide a very small serving of food – this will only be shared with approx. 8 students. No plastic/paper plates, cups or napkins are required, nor are any drinks. Students are asked to bring their water bottles to the party if they require a drink.

Thank you for your support.

TELL THEM FROM ME – PARENT SURVEY

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August and 25 October, though participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Information about the survey is available at : http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

2020 KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS

Currently we have approximately 68 Kindergarten students enrolled for 2020. For the last three years we have commenced the year with 120 Kindergarten students spread across six classes.

If you have a child (or know of any families) who will be commencing Kindergarten at CPS in 2020, could you please call into the office and complete the enrolment process. It’s critical that we know accurate student numbers as soon as possible as this impacts on how many teachers and classrooms are allocated by the Department.  With current Kindergarten enrolment numbers, we would only form 3 or 4 classes in 2020 as opposed to the six classes we have had since 2017.

Kindergarten orientation will take place from Week 1 of Term 4, which is earlier than previous years.

Neil Hinton, Principal.
