DEBATING TEAM – ZONE RUNNERS UP

This year Carlingford PS enrolled 2 teams into the NSW Premier's Debating Challenge.  The Lions Sabrina, Zayan, Yannis, Ahmed and the Tigers Rhidima, Sanjana, Arabi, Melissa  debated against other schools in a zone competition. Both teams committed to regular lunch time practice sessions and participated in 4 rounds of debating.  It has been wonderful to see how much the students have learnt and how much their debating skills have improved over the season. We were very proud that after 4 straight wins, the Carlingford Lions made it to the Zone final against the Northmead Nailers. Our team spoke very well on the day, but after a very close debate the victory went to Northmead.  We have been extremely impressed that the Carlingford Lions achieved Runners Up for our Zone, as it is their first year of debating. This is an amazing achievement for a group of students who at newcomers to this competition. The future of debating looks very strong for Carlingford!

OPERATION ART

Every year schools across New South Wales are invited to participate in Operation Art, an initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in association with the New South Wales Department of Education. The Operation Art program provides a forum for schools and students to demonstrate their visual arts achievements through exhibitions at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Congratulations to the following students who entered artwork in this years ‘Operation Art’ competition. Tara, Ksenia, Tara and Winnie have all had their artwork selected to be exhibited at the Armory Gallery at Sydney Olympic Park.  The Exhibition will be officially opened on Saturday 14 September at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park at 10:45 am. Their masterpieces will be displayed from 9 September to 29 October. The exhibition is open to the public and is well worth a look. Over 800 artworks will be on display from students from over 300 schools.

The compulsory element for the films this year is ‘voice’ which must be evident in some form.  Films need to be submitted by Friday 27 September to Mr Bhandarkar or Mrs Foo.  Interested students should see their teacher, Mr Bhandarkar or Mrs Foo for further details.

 PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

In this week’s session, We are introducing a 3 step model to encourage resilient responses; Pause, Plan, Proceed.  The Children take part in an activity to identify their feelings and the immediate effects on them.  The normalcy of feelings is acknowledged and the importance of being proactive is stressed.  The children learn that pausing when they are emotional is helpful.  They can do this by being still, taking a deep breath or counting to ten.  Pausing gives children space to see a situation more accurately before planning a response.

Overviews of each Peer Support lesson will be shared in the newsletter each week.  I encourage you to discuss these concepts with your child/ren to help them take an active role in Peer Support.

TELL THEM FROM ME - STUDENT SURVEY

Like many other public schools in the state, Carlingford PS will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26 August and 25 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

Additional information can be found at:

TELL THEM FROM ME – PARENT SURVEY

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.  The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, Ipads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August and 25 October, though participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Information about the survey is available at : http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

2020 KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS

Currently we have only 50 Kindergarten students enrolled for 2020. For the last three years we have commenced the year with 120 Kindergarten students spread across six classes.

If you have a child (or know of any families) who will be commencing Kindergarten at CPS in 2020, could you please call into the office and complete the enrolment process. It’s critical that we know accurate student numbers as soon as possible as this impacts on how many teachers and classrooms will be needed. With current Kindergarten enrolment numbers, we would only form two classes in 2020 as opposed to the six classes we have had since 2017.

Kindergarten transition is planned to take place earlier in Term 4, which is earlier than our normal transition schedule.

Neil Hinton, Principal.
