Principal's Report Term 3 Week 5

GIRLS CARLO CUP CHAMPIONS

Last Thursday, the Carlo Cup ended its gripping narrative with Belgium taking out the inaugural Girl's World Cup Final in front of a packed house on the Carlo Oval.

Both teams had numerous chances to score but it was the tournament golden boot Ellie that made the difference with two clinically taken goals.

France had their chances but were constantly denied by the Belgium defence as they managed to hold on to their lead when the final whistle blew.

This year we had over 50 girls participating in the tournament. We look forward to beating this mark next year. Thank you also to Finn for refereeing the final and Mr Lam for organising the tournament.

RYDE DANCE EISTEDDFOD

Congratulations to Miss Kelly and Miss Miss Rachel’s dance groups who competed at the Ryde Dance Eisteddfod last Saturday.

The Junior dancers, were amazing with their ‘Monsters Inc’ and routine took out first place!

Our 3/4 group, produced a wonderful delivery of their ‘Coco’, and took out third place.

Although our Senior dancers ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ routine was performed to perfection and they received a highly commended against very tough competition.

A huge thank you to Miss Kelly and Miss Rachel for all the time and effort they have spent with our students. The dancers have developed such self-belief and confidence under their guidance.

I was so impressed with the support of our parents with many being there all day, guiding, encouraging, doing hair and make-up and assisting our students.

It was a great day for our school, which highlighted all that is wonderful about the Carlingford Public School Community.

LITERACY DAY - TOP SHELF’ BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS

Yesterday, Carlingford Public School celebrated Book Week in style.

It was great to see so many students & teachers dressed up. There were indeed some interesting and amazing outfits.

Some ‘celebrities’ spotted in the playground included, Superman, Batman, Snow White, Cinderella, Harry Potter, Where’s Wally, Darth Vadar, Cat in the Hat, Wonder Woman, Woody, Alice & all her friends and a pencil case full of crayons.

Perhaps the most disturbing sight was a dwarf Tyrannosaurus Rex that appeared to have swallowed Mr Lam.

The day started with a K – 6 parade where all the students and staff showed off their outfits which was then followed by performances from visiting artists.

Our K – 2 students loved the production of ‘Royal Jelly’. The interactive show combining comic characters, vivid story-telling, puppetry and physical theatre was a really engaging experience.

Stage 2 were entertained by Ruben Meerman. His ‘Surfing Scientist’ show, was educational, highly entertaining and amusing. Students were amazed by the experiments using liquid nitrogen.

Stage 3 saw Reuben Meerman’s Climate Change.show where he explained the fundamental science behind climate change with spectacular live demonstrations, engaging visuals and exciting experiments.

I’m sure both performances inspired a ‘love of literature’ within the children.

Throughout the day, students then participated in Literacy activities based around a particular book.

Thank you to Mrs Castelletti for her coordination of our wonderful Book Week activities and to Mrs Kristensen for organising our book parade.

TELL THEM FROM ME - STUDENT SURVEY

Like many other public schools in the state, Carlingford PS will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26 August and 25 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

TELL THEM FROM ME – PARENT SURVEY

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August and 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Our school will provide further information about how to access the survey. In the meantime, more information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

2020 KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS

Currently we have only 40 Kindergarten students enrolled for 2020. For the last three years we have commenced the year with 120 Kindergarten students spread across six classes.

If you have a child (or know of any families) who will be commencing Kindergarten at CPS in 2020, could you please call into the office and complete the enrolment process. It’s critical that we know accurate student numbers as soon as possible as this impacts on how many teachers and classrooms we will be needed. With current Kindergarten enrolment numbers, we would only form two classes in 2020 as opposed to the six classes we have had since 2017.

Kindergarten transition is planned to take place earlier in Term 4, which is earlier than our normal transition schedule.

PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

Overviews of each Peer Support lesson can be found under the Learning at our school tab on the website. I encourage you to discuss these concepts with your child/ren to help them take an active role in Peer Support.

NEW RECYCLING PROGRAM TRIALED BY STAGE 3

Carlingford Public School and the P&C are introducing an innovative new Recycling program called ‘Charopy’.  This program is supported by the NSW ‘Return and Earn Scheme’ and helps children understand the benefits of recycling.  Charopy allows children to recycle eligible drink containers at school for a refund of l0c each.  With the help of silicone wristbands, the money the children earn, then becomes available to be spent in the school canteen.  As this is a trial for our school, only the Stage 3 students will be eligible to participate at the present time.  It is hoped that if successful, other Stages will be given the opportunity to participate later in the year.

NCCD

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) is an annual process participated in by all Australian schools across the country. The aim of this process is to provide the Australian Government with consistent information about the number of students with disability in Australian schools and the type of adjustments they require in order to access and participate in education on the same basis as other students. From 2018, the NCCD will be used by the Australian Government to inform funding for schools, known as the ‘student with disability loading’.

If you are a parent, guardian or carer of a child with disability who requires ongoing adjustments at school, a teacher or another school staff member will consult with you to understand your child’s needs. This collaborative approach ensures the most appropriate adjustments are chosen to support your child’s learning and participation at school. In some cases, an individual education plan (IEP) or personal learning plan (PLP) may be developed to document specific educational goals and to review your child’s progress over time. Your child will be included in the NCCD if they require ongoing adjustments at school due to a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
