EDUCATION WEEK OPEN DAY

Thank you to all our parents and friends who attended Open Day today.  It was a great day beginning with our K – 6 concert ‘Open Classrooms’, followed by ‘Open Classrooms’, and concluding with a picnic lunch. I had the opportunity to speak to many parents, and was thrilled with the positive feedback I received about our students, our staff and the direction in which the school is heading. Thank you to our Performance and Training Bands, the ‘Carloleles’, our amazing Dance groups and Junior and Senior Choirs for their wonderful performances on the day.  Special thanks to Miss Kelly and Miss Rachel for their efforts with our dance groups, Mr Bhandarkar and Mr Oram for our wonderful Carlolele group, Mr Boyd and Mrs Bowey for managing our school band program, and Mrs Muir, Mrs Bowey, Miss Tran, Miss Grieve and Miss Borg for their efforts with our choirs.  A huge thank you to Trudy Mendis, Svantje Duller, Emily Wong, Linda Xu and Jocelyn Lim, our P&C and the countless volunteers for organising the morning tea refreshments and sausage sizzle lunch. There was a real ‘community’ feeling about the day.  Thank you to all our parents who visited the library, donating books for our students.

    ARTS ALIVE

On Monday evening, 18 of our talented Stage 3 students from the Senior Choir performed at the prestigious Arts Alive Primary Choral concert.

They joined with 20 other school choirs at the iconic Sydney Town Hall forming a mass choir with hundreds of students. It was an outstanding achievement, with students memorising ten pieces over 6 months, with complex lyrics and parts. Congratulations to all students who attended – they represented our school with enthusiasm and dedication. Thanks to Mrs Bowey and Mrs Muir for their efforts with the students.

    FACILITY UPGRADE

Works carried out over the past month at Carlingford PS have entailed the installation of windows to Level 1 Hall and Multipurpose library. Joinery and painting has commenced to the homebases across Level 2 and 3. The scaffold surrounding the external façade of the building is scheduled to be removed upon the installation of horizontal and vertical louvres providing sun shading to the new building.
Upcoming works will see the continuation of joinery installation across all levels, services fit-off and overhead door installation. These activities continue to be discussed with the Project Reference Group. Please visit the School Infrastructure NSW’s website, for further information concerning the upgrade: https://www.schoolinfrastructure.nsw.gov.au/projects/c/carlingford-public-school.html

Thanks to Mr Bhandarkar for the following drone shots of our new building.

    LITERACY DAY – 2019

This year, Literacy Day will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 20, with a Literacy extravaganza taking place.  Our students will be entertained by a colourful storytelling company and a fantastic author.
K – 2 students will journey into the topical science-driven world of bees through the Co Theatre Physical production of ‘Royal Jelly’. This is an interactive show that combines comic characters, vivid story-telling, bee facts, puppetry and physical theatre that poses questions with the aim of extending young minds.
Years 3 – 4 will be treated to an entertaining show by Ruben Meerman called ‘The Surfing Scientist.’ Ruben is a surfer with a physics degree and a passion for science and education. He has appeared on several TV shows and has written 4 children’s science books.  Years 5 – 6 will also see Reuben Meerman in his performance about Climate Change. He explains the fundamental science behind climate change with spectacular live demonstrations, engaging visuals and exciting experiments. Students and teachers are asked to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. I already have my outfit ready to go! Some of Mrs Castelletti’s suggestions for book characters include Tashi, Paddington Bear, dragons, pirates, bears, princesses, animals, make believe, Cinderella, Charlie & Lola, Where’s Wally, Pingu… - the list is endless.

Thank you to Mrs Castelletti for her coordination of our wonderful Book Week activities.

    2020 KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS

Currently we have only 40 Kindergarten students enrolled for 2020. For the last three years we have commenced the year with 120 Kindergarten students spread across six classes.  If you have a child (or know of any families) who will be commencing Kindergarten at CPS in 2020, could you please call into the office and complete the enrolment process. It’s critical that we know accurate student numbers as soon as possible as this impacts on how many teachers and classrooms we will be needed. With current Kindergarten enrolment numbers, we would only form two classes in 2020 as opposed to the six classes we have had since 2017.  Kindergarten transition is planned to take place earlier in Term 4, which is earlier than our normal transition schedule.

    PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

In this week’s session, the students will establish connections with the other members of their group and develop their group agreement to enable them to work well together. Students will discuss an example of a challenging situation and some resilient and non-resilient responses.

Overviews of each Peer Support lesson will be shared in the newsletter each week. I encourage you to discuss these concepts with your child/ren to help them take an active role in Peer Support.

    NAMING OUR CHICKENS

Our Carlo Chicks have moved into ‘Cluckingham Palace’ and are enjoying their new home. We are very excited to have 7 chickens joining the Carlingford Public School community. They are currently 8 weeks old and growing fast! Our Carlo Chicks are a wonderful addition to the Carlo Gardens and will enrich student learning.  This week we will be having a competition to name the chickens. If you would like to enter the competition, there will be an opportunity to enter each morning, under the COLA.  Entries are $1 or $2 for 3 entries, all money raised will go towards feeding and looking after the chickens. At the end of the competition, 20 names will be drawn and classes will vote on the final name of each chicken.

NEW RECYCLING PROGRAM TRIALED BY STAGE 3

Carlingford Public School and the P&C are introducing an innovative new Recycling program called ‘Charopy’.  This program is supported by the NSW ‘Return and Earn Scheme’ and helps children understand the benefits of recycling.  Charopy allows children to recycle eligible drink containers at school for a refund of l0c each.  With the help of silicone wristbands, the money the children earn, then becomes available to be spent in the school canteen.  As this is a trial for our school, only the Stage 3 students will be eligible to participate at the present time.  It is hoped that if successful, other Stages will be given the opportunity to participate later in the year.

 NCCD

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) is an annual process participated in by all Australian schools across the country. The aim of this process is to provide the Australian Government with consistent information about the number of students with disability in Australian schools and the type of adjustments they require in order to access and participate in education on the same basis as other students. From 2018, the NCCD will be used by the Australian Government to inform funding for schools, known as the ‘student with disability loading’.  If you are a parent, guardian or carer of a child with disability who requires ongoing adjustments at school, a teacher or another school staff member will consult with you to understand your child’s needs. This collaborative approach ensures the most appropriate adjustments are chosen to support your child’s learning and participation at school. In some cases, an individual education plan (IEP) or personal learning plan (PLP) may be developed to document specific educational goals and to review your child’s progress over time. Your child will be included in the NCCD if they require ongoing adjustments at school due to a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
